Creativity and Humor shown to Promote Well-Being in Older Adults via Similar Mechanisms
Posted by Natalie Chan in categories: biotech/medical, humor, life extension, neuroscience
Many people associate aging with a decline in cognitive function, health issues, and reduced activity. Uncovering mental processes that can boost the well-being of the older adults could be highly beneficial, as it could help to devise more effective activities aimed at improving their quality of life.
Researchers at University of Brescia and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart recently carried out a study investigating the contribution of creativity and humor to the well-being of the elderly. Their findings, published in Neuroscience Letters, show that these two distinct human experiences share common psychological and neurobiological processes that promote well-being in older adults.
“Our recent study belongs to a line of research aimed at investigating the cognitive resources which are still available to elderly people and at understanding how such resources can support well-being,” Alessandro Antonietti, co-author of the paper, told Medical Xpress.

A Portal to the Past: Hubble Reveals an Ancient Witness to a Galactic Merger
Posted by Saúl Morales Rodriguéz in category: life extension
NGC 2005, a globular cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud, serves as a crucial piece of evidence supporting the theory of galaxies evolving through mergers.
This mesmerizing image from the Hubble Space Telescope features the globular cluster NGC 2005. While it is not unusual in and of itself, it is a peculiarity in relation to its surroundings.
NGC 2005 is located about 750 light-years from the heart of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is the Milky Way ’s largest satellite galaxy and which itself lies about 162,000 light-years from Earth. Globular clusters are densely packed clusters that can constitute tens of thousands or millions of stars. Their density means that they are tightly gravitationally bound and are therefore very stable. This stability contributes to their longevity: globular clusters can be billions of years old, and as such often comprise very old stars.

Japan invents heat-switch for moon rovers to fight deadly lunar weather
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: innovation, life extension
Researchers in Japan have developed a novel “heat switch device” that could extend the lifespan of lunar exploration vehicles in the extreme Moon environment.
Moon goes through extreme temperature variations, ranging from scorching highs of 127°C (260°F) to freezing lows of −173°C (−280°F).
Lunar rovers cost millions of dollars to build and operate, but lunar temperatures limit their operating life. As exploration of the lunar surface is gaining pace, surface missions demand innovative solutions for thermal control.

Fruitful insights on the brain from research on flies
Posted by The Neuro-Network in categories: life extension, neuroscience
Senescent cells, often described as zombie-like, are ones that have stopped dividing but are still alive.
Research led by the lab of Nancy M. Bonini of the School of Arts & Sciences have uncovered new details about the role of zombie-like cells in brain aging, using the fruit fly as a model.

Brain aging research: A need for balance
Posted by Shubham Ghosh Roy in categories: biotech/medical, life extension, robotics/AI
“Testing people early, so early interventions are possible, is key to longevity,” she says. “Technology, data and AI, and what we’re starting to be able to do with it, are propelling us to a time of greater understanding which will foster earlier, more effective treatment. Or perhaps even therapies that can delay neurodegenerative diseases, pushing back dementia to beyond our lifespan.”
Mind Over Matter goes out on 29th and 30th June on BBC News and 30th June on BBC One.
Lara Lewington will be hosting a Fireside Chat on AI drug discovery with Alex Zhavoronkov at next week’s Founders Longevity Forum. Register your interest to discover how AI is accelerating drug discovery, commercialization and licensing models HERE.

Combining proteomics and AI to enable ‘a new era in healthcare’
Posted by Shubham Ghosh Roy in categories: biotech/medical, genetics, life extension, robotics/AI
Understanding aging and age-related diseases requires analyzing a vast number of factors, including an individual’s genetics, immune system, epigenetics, environment and beyond. While AI has long been touted for its potential to shed light on these complexities of human biology and enable the next generation of healthcare, we’ve yet to see the emergence of tools that truly deliver on this promise.
Leveraging advanced plasma proteomics, US startup Alden Scientific has developed AI models capable of making the connections needed to accurately assess an individual’s state of health and risk of disease. The company’s tool measures more than 200 different conditions, including leading causes of morbidity and mortality such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Significantly, its models also enable an individual to understand how an intervention impacts these risks.
With a host of top Silicon Valley investors among its early adopters, Alden is now using its platform to conduct an IRB-approved health study designed to provide a “longitudinal understanding of the interplay between environmental, biological, and medical data.”
