Gallium nitride processor: Next-generation technology for space exploration https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/gallium-nitride-processor-next-generation-technology-for-space-exploration Sun, 31 Dec 2017 20:22:33 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/gallium-nitride-processor-next-generation-technology-for-space-exploration

A material known as gallium nitride (GaN), poised to become the next semiconductor for power electronics, could also be essential for various space applications. Yuji Zhao, an expert in electrical and computer engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), plans to develop the first ever processor from gallium nitride, which could revolutionize future space exploration missions.

Gallium nitride is a semiconductor compound commonly used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The material has the ability to conduct electrons more than 1,000 times more efficiently than silicon. It outstrips silicon in speed, temperature, power handling, and is expected to replace it when silicon-based devices will reach their limits.

Besides LEDs, GaN can be used in the production of semiconductor power devices as well as RF components. Now, Yuji Zhao aims to use this material to develop a high-temperature microprocessor for space applications. He received a three-year $750,000 grant from NASA’s Hot Operating Temperature Technology (HOTTech) program for his project.

The fourth state of matter, plasma: A technology to improve bone healing? https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/the-fourth-state-of-matter-plasma-a-technology-to-improve-bone-healing Sun, 31 Dec 2017 17:22:58 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/the-fourth-state-of-matter-plasma-a-technology-to-improve-bone-healing

Cold plasma looks like the glow from the “Star Wars” blue lightsaber but this beam of energy, made of electrons that change polarity at micro-second or nanosecond speeds, could help bones heal faster, according to a study published August 11th in the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

Most people interact with plasma every day. It’s in our TVs, fluorescent lights, lightning, the aurora borealis, and the sun. However, these are all examples of hot or “thermal” plasmas. Since the discovery of , about 20 years ago, it has been used in agriculture to sterilize the surface of fruit without damaging the delicate edibles. More recently, scientists have been performing experiments treating living animal cells and tissues with cold plasma to learn more about its potential applications in medicine.

“We’ve previously studied how different applications of cold plasma can either directly kill cells, such as in skin cancer, or help them grow, as in developing bones. In this study, we asked how cold plasma would affect the area surrounding cells, known as the extracellular matrix,” says lead author Theresa Freeman, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. The extracellular matrix around cells is made of collagen and other proteins that interact with the cells and can influence their growth and behavior. For example, the extracellular matrix can either promote or inhibit or cancer cell growth and metastasis.

Some Things About Tech Were Good in 2017. No, Really https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/some-things-about-tech-were-good-in-2017-no-really Sun, 31 Dec 2017 09:42:20 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/some-things-about-tech-were-good-in-2017-no-really

But tech wasn’t all bad this year. As many of Silicon Valley’s largest companies were wreaking havoc, numerous people and organizations used technology to advance important causes and address large-scale problems.

These projects do not always make headlines, but they show what’s possible when technologists use their powers for good. So I’m presenting the first-ever Actually Good Tech Awards, to highlight a handful of tech efforts that produced real societal benefits this year.

Amid a series of scandals and sins, a few righteous tech innovators actually brought positive change this year.

Russian Billionaire Sets up an Alien-hunting Mission to Saturn Moon https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/russian-billionaire-sets-up-an-alien-hunting-mission-to-saturn-moon Sun, 31 Dec 2017 08:42:29 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/russian-billionaire-sets-up-an-alien-hunting-mission-to-saturn-moon

Russian tech tycoon turned-ET wayfarer Yuri Milner says he intends to beat NASA to a mission to the Saturn moon Enceladus looking for alien lifeforms.

The one overarching question we are asking at our foundation is: ‘Are we alone in the universe?’” said Milner, who has swore over $200 million to the Breakthrough Initiative, an association he established in 2015 that observes space, and grows new methods for infinite travel.

Talking at a Seattle gathering, ‘A New Space Age’, Milner said his science group agrees there are three potential areas for additional earthly lifeforms in our close planetary system: under the surface of Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, and “the most encouraging competitor,” Enceladus.

Progress to turning silicon transistors into qubits which could enable billion qubit quantum computers https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/progress-to-turning-silicon-transistors-into-qubits-which-could-enable-billion-qubit-quantum-computers Sun, 31 Dec 2017 08:02:32 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/progress-to-turning-silicon-transistors-into-qubits-which-could-enable-billion-qubit-quantum-computers

Japanese RIKEN researchers are trying to adapt existing the silicon metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) to integrate qubits with current electronics, offering the potential for scaling up quantum devices and bringing quantum computing closer to becoming a reality.

Keiji Ono and colleagues from the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and the Toshiba Corporation in Japan, in collaboration with researchers from the United States, are investigating the properties of qubits produced by imperfections or defects in silicon MOSFETs. In particular, they are exploring their potential for developing quantum computing devices that are compatible with current manufacturing technologies.

“Companies like IBM and Google are developing quantum computers that use superconductors,” explains Ono. “In contrast, we are attempting to develop a quantum computer based on the silicon manufacturing techniques currently used to make computers and smart phones. The advantage of this approach is that it can leverage existing industrial knowledge and technology.”

Report Examines Benefits of Settling Space Using NEO Resources https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/report-examines-benefits-of-settling-space-using-neo-resources Sun, 31 Dec 2017 07:42:31 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2017/12/report-examines-benefits-of-settling-space-using-neo-resources

TransAstra Corporation recently completed an in-depth study of how to use resources from near Earth objects to facilitate space exploration and settlement.

The 82-page report, “Stepping Stones: Economic Analysis of Space Transportation Supplied From NEO Resources,” was funded with a $100,000 grant from NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.

“The Stepping Stones economic analysis of space transportation supplied from near-Earth object (NEO) resources demonstrates the potential to break the tyranny of increasing space transportation costs created by dependence on Earth-based resources, particularly propellant,” the report states.
